Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS
The wildlife photographer's workhorse. Internal zoom keeps the balance consistent, and the sharpness at 600mm rivals prime lenses costing three times as much.

Sony 200-600mm G Review: Wildlife Reach
Pros
- Internal zoom mechanism (balance helps on gimbals)
- Short zoom throw for fast action
- Sharp even at 600mm
- Compatible with teleconverters
Cons
- Large and heavy to transport
- f/6.3 at the long end
- Foot is not Arca-Swiss compatible
Introduction
The Sony FE 200-600mm G changed the wildlife game. Before this, you had to spend $12,000 for a 600mm prime or use inferior 150-600mm third-party zooms. This lens bridges the gap.
Handling
The internal zoom is the killer feature. The lens doesn't get longer as you zoom, which is vital for balance on a gimbal or monopod. The throw is short, so you can go from 200mm to 600mm with a flick of the wrist.
Image Quality
It is astonishingly sharp. Paired with the A1 or A7R V, you can count individual feathers on a bird from 50 yards away.
Verdict
The best value super-telephoto lens on the market, bar none.
